Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:   Under the direction of the Director of Corporate Risk Management/EH&S, this position will provide full time Environmental Health and Safety compliance and Risk Management support to all CA operations and will help ensure that all practices are in compliance with CA regulatory requirements, company policies and Risk Management initiatives. This position will be responsible for overseeing regulatory and employee training programs as well as overseeing regulatory permitting requirements. This position will help manage insurance claims and Risk Management related programs associated with auto, injury, cargo, general liability and property loss events across the enterprise. As part of Hawthorne's philosophy of developing and sustaining a strong and viable safety culture, this position will play a vital and hands-on role in helping our managers and leaders drive down risk by implementing effective and sustainable safety programs.   

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace. Perform surveys to identify and evaluate occupational health, safety and environmental conditions. Conduct and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical conditions, environmental compliance and safe work practices. Provide advice and counsel concerning all city, state, and federal compliance regulations.
  • Support the Director of Corporate Risk Management/EH&S with environmental compliance programs related to hazardous materials, hazardous wastes, air permitting, water pollution control, and community right-to-know programs. Programs include but are not limited to: Hazardous Waste Management, Storm Water Pollution Prevention, Air emissions permitting, SPCC compliance, Above Ground Storage Tank compliance, DOT, Emergency Planning and Spill Prevention.
  • Support company safety culture initiatives through customized assessment campaigns as part of the overall Risk Management philosophy of injury prevention.
  • Responsible for assisting the Training Dept. with setting up and maintaining all EH&S training and certification programs including record inputting into the company LMS and/or HR system.
  • Responsible for the overall administration of auto, property, cargo and general liability insurance claims (company-wide). Duties include supporting initial incident response, insurance company notification(s) and any follow-up reporting.
  • Responsible for overseeing all cargo claims across the enterprise and setting up a network of responsible claim contacts for each division.
  • Responsible for implementing a cargo loss control program by establishing a loss control committee with the goal of creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and risk reduction. This will entail developing strong partnerships with our cargo underwriters and loss control engineers.
  • Provide EH&S and Risk Management support and backup to the Compliance and Administrative Support Manager for Hawthorne Pacific.
  • Perform other related duties as directed that correspond to the overall function of this position
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Must have a high school diploma or have passed a G.E.D. test. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; or five to seven years' related experience.
  • Valid EH&S vocational certifications preferred (HAZWOPER, OSHA 30/10 Hour for construction or general industry).
  • Occupational and Environmental Technician Training, Education and Certification preferred
  • Must have knowledge or training in the following: occupational health, safety and environmental compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and standards.
  • Experience with OSHA/EPA/MSHA standards, regulations, concepts, practices, and procedures within the health, safety and environmental fields.
  • Must have a valid Class "C" CA State Drivers' License with a good driving record.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Must have good communication skills and proper business etiquette.
  • Must have good working knowledge of MS Office programs..

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Walking and moving about on foot often up and down stairs.
  • Handling: Seizes, helps or works with hands.
  • Lifting: Raises or lowers miscellaneous paperwork.
  • Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.
  • Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
  • Standing: Remains in standing position, if required to perform various functions of the job.
  • Vision: Read paperwork, employment files and records on the computer.
  • Talking: Communications by phone and in person.
  • Sitting: Sits at desk.  Sits for long periods of time.

    ENVIRONMENTAL:          

  • Noise: Occasionally works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
  • Temp/Weather: Works in an office environment as well as exterior locations (repair shops, landfills, rental yards)
  • Chemicals: Potential exposure to hazardous materials including: spray painting operations, hazardous materials, oils, lubricants, solvents .
